Is Praxis the New Inquiry? Why Fourth-Year Students are Even More Confused Than Before

For decades, students have asked “what would it be like to have a class that is fully self-led?” Many suspected that it would be a transformative, innovative learning experience, but as it turns out, it’s just like Inquiry (featuring new-and-improved apathy)!  Turns out Inquiry is the gift that doesn’t stop giving. Even though we really want it to stop giving. Please stop.

Following Reading Week, these fourth year Praxis tutorials kicked off with a bang. Classes launched with astronomical attendance rates– nearly 15% of the cohort showed up to their first class. For those lucky enough to find an empty seat, students had the privilege of participating in thoughtfully crafted, evocative ice breakers such as Two Truths & a Lie. But fear not, the excitement extends beyond the classroom as well! Certain tutorial classes are said to be collaborating and joining up to “get ideas” during their scheduled class times. Now, instead of sitting in silence with ten other eager Praxheads, you can sit in awkward silence with twenty others as a great big Praxamily™®©. Two classes were particularly inspired by this prospect and joined up just to introduce names for 30 minutes. Moreover, you no longer have to fear that your facilitator is judging you– only your peers are judging you now (and the hidden security cameras that the faculty put up, but you don’t have to worry about that)!

Some cool cats are actually going all-in for advocacy and doing meaningful things like pushing for Cell Bio reform; yup, even the Praxis tutorials are going on strike. These projects are the results of the most creative student minds in the country. For example, many tutorials want to take hikes and host show-and-tell sessions. Considering that the BHSc Charity Fashion Show was the result of these Praxis tutorials in the past, it appears that each cohort is only getting more ambitious.
