The Big Bad Health-Pol Wolf and The Three Little Pigs

Once upon a time, there were three little pigs who just graduated from BHSc. They were now struggling to find something to do with their life besides going to medical school.

The first little pig decided to become a health policy analyst. He liked reading about focusing events and analyzing changes in indicators, and he had spectacular ideas on policies (with at least two or more features to the proposed policy option, of course). So he worked tirelessly to prepare political rationales and appendices to present to the Ministry of Health’s Management Committee. He knew he had done well when the classroom of people broke out into applause after his 2.5 minute presentation. But, one committee member did not. The tall monotonous man looked angry and unimpressed, his tight fitting dress shirt and pants giving him an aura of unfriendliness. In the question period, he pointed out all the flaws to his work, and said that he would huff and puff and give him a ridiculously low mark without any guidance on how to improve. The first little pig was scared the man was going to explode in rage, so he fled.

The second little pig decided to work at a university. His only job was to click through the slideshow and check the Mentimeter for a health policy class. But his greatest wish was to lead the class and teach the students himself. One day he was granted permission to host an online Q&A session, and as students joined the call, he skillfully answered an enormous amount of questions they had on their upcoming assignment. It was almost as if the original instructions given to the students had been so unclear in the first place that they needed extra clarifications and support now. The session was going incredibly smoothly until he saw someone turn on their camera – it was the tall monotonous man with white hair and dark contrasting glasses. The man unmuted and said he would huff and puff and give even more obscure and conflicting instructions for the assignment. The second little pig was so shocked, he ended the call and fled to meet the third little pig.

The third little pig, a brave keener alumnus, listened to the tales of the first and second little pigs and he came up with a plan. HE read every page of the book Ontario’s Health System: Key Insights for Engaged Citizens, Professionals and Policymakers by Lawn Lavish, watched every single SDI module on Avenue, asked a question in every single 2 minute question period, and answered every iClicker question without waiting to see what the majority of the class answered. Finally when he felt as powerful as 250 health science students and 5 TAs, he went to meet the tall monotonous man and with a huff and a puff he blew his house down.
