The BHSc Office has announced that they are in need of Poor Chumps,er, Peer Tutors, to help facilitate various Inquiry courses. Inquiry director Maggie “Laura” Secord-Thatcher went on record to state that “the BHSc office is stunned and appalled that students are not willing to contribute 9 hours a week, their dignity, and the blood of a first-born sacrifice to enroll in our 3-unit course.” The announcement comes after the Peer Tutor program received a record low of just 3 applicants: an eager pre-med desperate for Maggie’s letter of recommendation, an overzealous proponent of the Inquiry pedagogy, and of course, a Child Health student.
The Procrastinator conducted a deep-dive to investigate why these unpaid TAs won’t go back to inquiring. As a team that regularly publishes hard-hitting investigative journalism, we arrived at the incredible revelation for the lack of Peer Tutors: inflation’s a b***h. With the prices of Kritik subscriptions skyrocketing from $19.99 to $20.05, why would anyone want to waste their precious time if it isn’t to make bank? One 4th year BHSc student agrees, stating, “Peer Tutoring is too much work for too little pay. You sit around watching 1st years do nothing for hours on end. I’d much rather sit around and watch 2nd years do nothing for hours on end as a Praxis TA. At least that way I’d get paid.”
Maggie retorted by declaring that the Peer Tutors get paid in “wisdom”. Dr. Secord-Thatcher contends that by becoming a Peer Tutor, one will learn to carry on the BHSc legacy with hopes that they can convince froshies into believing that Inquiry is a great way to learn and definitely not just a way to balance out everyone’s miserable Cell Bio grades. Despite the wonderful message, it has been difficult for Inquiry staff to enlist more of these 4th year disappointments.
Ultimately, the Peer Tutor shortage has hit the Faculty of Health Sciences hard, but as it turns out, the solution may lie in the money. Instead of investing in a record-breaking THIRD Centre for Simulation-Based Learning and an overwhelming surplus of bluffs, why not pay the Peer Tutors, dammit?!
